My initial independent voyage was when I competed for Editorial/Cartooning in Tacloban City, Leyte. I was the lone representative of the school for the "NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS PRESS CONFERENCE" that lasted for a couple of weeks.
Nobody was there with me except for some delegates from nearby school who had adopted me during the entire competition. Some relatives, like Tita Emma (papa’s cousin), had sponsored my extra expenses since the school couldn’t provide fully. Out of a hundred competitors per category, I got rewarded for being in the top 20.
Travelling via ferry was new to me, even coming close to San Juanico Bridge, Mc. Arthur’s monument, and Sto. Nino shrine. I was just so proud of that experience!
Notes:
The City of Tacloban is a port city approximately 360 miles southeast of Manila. It is the first in Eastern Visayas to be classified as a Highly Urbanized City. It is the capital ofPhilippine province of Leyte.
The San Juanico Bridge, formerly the Marcos Bridge, is a Compression arch bridge in the Philippines stretching from Samar to Leyte crossing the San Juanico Strait. It is part of the Pan-Philippine Highway. It is the longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of water with a length of 2.16 kilometers (1.34 mi). It is considered one of the most beautifully-designed bridges in Philippines.
